Ateni Fortress

Ateni Fortress

One of the most impregnable fortresses in Georgia - Ateni Fortress is located in the Shida Kartli region, in the Gori municipality, in the Ateni Gorge,
on the left bank of the Tana River, near the village of Ateni, on a high mountain peak. For centuries, it had an important strategic purpose for the country -
it controlled the shortest route from Shida Kartli to the south.
The fortress is flanked on one side by Satsiviskhevi, and on the other by Abanoskhevi. It dates back to the 10th-11th centuries and is built of crushed stone.
The building mainly consists of two sections. The northern section is relatively small, the larger and main section is located to the south. The fence is reinforced with piers.
Inside the fence are the Metzikhovets' stables, a reservoir, and other buildings. The entrance is from the north. The castle is not large, but it is difficult to access.
It guarded the road from Shida Kartli to southern Georgia. In 1920, the monument was badly damaged during an earthquake, and its original plan and massing cannot be determined.
